Mini Computer with Unlimited Potential

Have you ever wanted to experiment with computers or perhaps wanted to turn a great idea or project into reality but didn't want to spend a fortune? Perhaps you wanted to learn more about computers, coding, or new operating systems. If so, then the Raspberry Pi is the answer to all of your prayers! Okay, maybe not all of them...

What is Raspberry Pi?

It's a wittle itty bitty computer! A few years back, a company that manufactures smartphone chipsets (Broadcom) partnered with the University of Cambridge. Together they co-founded the Raspberry Pi Foundation. It is a charitable foundation dedicated to educational research. Learn more here.

Initially, RPI was made to teach kids programming and to provide third-world countries with access to cheap and yet functional computers. However, since the product launched, it has become extremely popular around the globe due to its simplicity and the many cool projects you can do with this tiny computer.

Below are the top 3 reasons why I love the Raspberry Pi and why I recommend this device to anyone who loves to experiment, learn, or feed their techy curiosity.

1. It's Affordable

The Raspberry Pi is known for not only its small size, but also for its affordable price. For just $35, you can purchase a fully loaded mini-computer. There are many versions of the Raspberry currently available. If you are just getting started, I would suggest going with the CanaKit Raspberry Pi 3 B+ Starter Kit. This kit includes pretty much everything you would need to get started with any Raspberry Pi projects. Other RPI versions include:

  • Raspberry Pi 4 Model B - this is the latest model and comes with an improved processor for improved speed and performance. It also comes with upgraded USB capacity, your choice of RAM 1 1GB, 2GB or 4GB (depending on how much you need) and dual-display capability.

  • Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ - this is the third generation single-board computer in A+ format.

  • Raspberry PI 3 Model B+ - This was the final version of the 3rd generation single-board computer.

2. You can do whatever you want with it

The possibilities are truly endless with the Raspberry Pi. This tiny computer comes with everything you need on a small board. The RPI includes a built-in RAM and CPU, two chips, a micro USB charger to power the device, HDMI port, 40 GPIO pin which allows you to connect your RPI to different sensors and other programs and a micro-sd card slot that can be used as a "hard drive."

With the RPI you can literally do anything your techy heart desires. You can use it to create fun projects, learn how to code, home automation, innovative solutions (small-scale), and any other DIY projects you can think of. The possibilities are truly endless.

I also love how much information and resources for RPI exist out on the Internet. There are countless websites, blogs, and clubs all sharing their latest RPI innovations or creative (and sometimes crazy) projects.

3. Runs on a Linux Operating System

How many of us have actually interacted with an operating system other than Windows? The Raspberry Pi runs on a Linux operating system. This is a great opportunity to learn a new OS and Linux OS commands. This is also a great way to begin to expose yourself to programming and using command line prompts! So much opportunity to learn and grow!

I just love this tiny computer and all its potential. Have you experimented with the Raspberry Pi or perhaps have project ideas you'd love to share? Would you be interested in learning more? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
